On November 7, 2023, Michael Wing was elected as an at-large member of the City Council in the City of Lancaster, Ohio at the age of 27 years old. Unlike most 27-year-olds, he spent countless hours weekends and evening knocking on doors all over the city, placing yard signs, and utilizing social media to get the word out for his campaign. By the time all the votes were counted, Michael received 5,517 votes, enough for him to win a seat on Council. His electoral success can mostly be attributed to his campaign manager (and sister) Alexia Wing. When he was sworn in, he was the second-youngest council member. His committee assignments include Water and Wastewater (Chair), Economic Development, and Service.
Lancaster, Ohio is the county seat of Fairfield County and has a population of 40,552. With Columbus being only 30 miles away, Lancaster offers residents a small town feel within one of the fastest growing regions in the Midwest. Lancaster was founded in 1800 as one of the cites along Zane’s Trace. It is the hometown of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, his brother John Sherman, author of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. It is also the hometown of the designer of the current 50-star flag, and Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation, whose glassware is found in kitchen cabinets and restaurants across the country.
Michael Wing is the son of Robert (descended from the first settlers of Putnam County, Ohio) and Beth Wing. He is a Lancaster High School graduate and received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Miami University (OH) in 2019. Michael began his political career in college, working for a U.S. Congressman, a U.S. Senator, and volunteering on several campaigns. He spent a semester in Washington, D.C. which began the week before he attended the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Photo: Alexia, Michael, Beth, & Robert Wing
After graduation, Michael returned back to his hometown and began working as an aide at the Ohio House of Representatives. He worked for two State Representatives and as a Committee Clerk during his nearly five-year tenure. Michael currently works in state government affairs for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
Michael is also an Eagle Scout, and he believes working on this rank is what inspired him to public service. Outside of work and Council, Michael enjoys being a part of and volunteering with First United Methodist Church, the Lancaster High School Bands Alumni Committee, Boy Scout Troop 106, Kairos Prison Ministry, Lancaster Festival, Fairfield County Republican Party Executive Committee, and Fairfield County Young Republican Club. In his free time, he enjoys being outdoors, camping, reading, and genealogy.
