Wing Family Bibles

Bibles are incredible repositories of family history that may or may not have been documented outside the family.  They relate the joys and the sorrows of our ancestors with such simple words as “our little girl”, a phrase that carried all the heartbreak of those days.

The Bibles also show the resilience of the Wings. The next Bible I scanned was owned by Lorenzo Socrates Wing, born after his brother Socrates Lorenzo died. Lorenzo Socrates married Anna Maria Loelfer, had four children and lived 73 years. His Bible includes even more Wing history.

If you have a family Bible with genealogical information such as marriages, births, and deaths, contact me at Historian@wingfamily.org.  Donations are happily accepted or if you prefer to keep your Bible in the family, contact me for information on how to preserve that data and share it with your Wing cousins.

Kennard Thompson Wing and his sisters, Connie and Linda, donated Bibles, family photos, and a bit of history for the Wing line that includes Lorenzo Philander Wing (pictured above), Lorenzo Socrates Wing, Richard Socrates Wing, Kennard Loren Wing and his children mentioned above.

Lorenzo Philander Wing’s Bible (dated 1823) included family history: births and deaths. Some family history is heartbreaking even after 174 years.  Births were listed on the front flyleaf:

Thomas Philander Wing was bourn on the 29 of August 1837; a little girl born on the 6th day of February 1839 Sarah Eliza; Selden Baldwin Wing was bourn on the 31 of October 1848; Socrates Lorenzo Wing was bourn on the 13 of November 1848; Orphelia Almira Wing was born on the 1st of December 1848; June Eleanor Wing was born on 4th day of March 1848.

On the back flyleaf we find the following:

Our little girl departed this life in October 1839 Sarah Eliza; Selden Baldwin Wing departed this life on the 9th day of January 1849; Socrates Lorenzo Wing and Orphelia Almira Wing departed this life on the 10th day of January 1849; Thomas Philander Wing departed this life on the 12th day of January 1849; Jane Eleanor Wing departed this life on the 16th day of January 1849.

And just inside the front cover, Richard Socrates Wing wrote:

These children all buried in unmarked grave. Collingwood Cemetery, Phillips Ave. West Toledo Ohio

Lorenzo P Wing and wife Elvira have stone marked WING R.W. 1966

Kennard’s note with the donations mentioned the children all died of cholera.
