Reunion Speaker

If you enjoyed the stories of the Civil War Wings in the OWL this year…you’ll really want to attend this summer’s annual reunion to meet one of the nation’s leading authorities on Gettysburg and the Civil War.
Scott Mingus, the author of more than three dozen non-fiction books on the Civil War and the Underground Railroad, will be our guest speaker at the Wing Family of America annual reunion this summer in historic Gettysburg, PA. He will address the reunion attendees on Friday night during the weekend of June 20-22.

Mingus is a storyteller, and he’ll share his insights from decades of research into the personal interests and motivations of the participants, the townspeople, and the loved ones back home – and what they all endured. It will provide a glimpse into the lives of those involved in this key battle of the US Civil War.

More about our speaker

In 2023, Mingus received recognition as co-author of a two-volume study "If We Are Striking for Pennsylvania: The Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac March to Gettysburg.” In it, Mingus combines a variety of perspectives –military, media, political, social, economic and civilian – as soldiers from both armies marched toward their destiny at Gettysburg.

The work won him the 2023 Bachelder-Coddington Award presented by the Civil War Round Table of Gettysburg, recognizing outstanding scholarship and new insights into the battle's history.
Before he retired and took up the Civil War as a full-time hobby, Mingus was a leading scientist and executive in the global paper industry. He has patents for two important inventions in our lives: self-adhesive postage stamps and bar code labels. His great-great-grandfather was a 15-year-old drummer boy for the 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and other family members fought at Antietam and Gettysburg in the Army of the Potomac.

Mingus has also written six scenario books on miniature wargaming and was elected to the hobby’s prestigious Legion of Honor in 2011.

He maintains a blog on the Civil War history of York County (www.yorkblog.com/cannonball) and is a local Civil War tour guide for the York County Heritage Trust. He received the 2013 Heritage Profile Award for his contributions to local Civil War history.
